The game is an indigenous card game to the Indian Community of Durban, South Africa. It is thought to have its origins when indentured labourers arrived in South Africa and research has shown that there are variations in Mauritius and India.

The game of Thunee is played with twenty-four cards, using the "SIX" Cards as a scoreboard. Until now, the rules of the game were handed down in the oral tradition and the game is [played by young and old alike, from schools to pubs, from universities to homes.
